Modern Indian Cuisine in the heart of Williamstown . . . India's history is as rich and colorful as its food. A land of centuries- old traditions, many faiths, and a plethora of languages and dialects, India's culture never fails to mesmerize or its food to tantalize.

We travel here annually from Wisconsin. The Spice Root has always been a necessary stop. Unfortunately our last visit, yesterday (also it was my birthday) was awful. The service was incredibly bad. Our server started us out with providing my drink much later than everyone elses. Once I got my drink it didn't seem to be what I ordered. It seems as if he knew it was wrong when he came over but only admitted it when I questioned it---otherwise I don't think he would have said anything. From there the service was sluggish and he had an attitude. He seemed overwhelmed but not sure if he ever has control of servicing tables, even if it weren't crowded. He would go off to the kitchen for long amounts of time and when we would ask for something he would respond "would you please wait" then we would maybe see him again 5-10 minutes later...

We were a party of 7 and he never checked back on us for addiitonal drinks or anything. When we ordered our food he seemed annoyed and rushed and didn't provide any helpful information. We asked the water server for help but she didn' speak English.

It's too bad, the food was good as always but service is also a very important part of dining at a finer restaurant and the Spice Root failed miserably. (July 27,2008)

The food here was awful. I'd eaten here before and it was great - don't know what happened but I won't be back to find out. Chicken tasted like rancid cardboard, and samosas were like leather. Unbelievable. I've never had bad Indian food before!

I've lived overseas for 16 years in 4 different countries and have also lived on both coasts, the midwest, the south, in over a dozen states. In all these places, I seek out Indian restaurants as this is my favorite foreign cuisine. I have easily dined at over 100 such establishments. Spice Root is by far THE BEST I've ever eaten at, from food, to service to atmosphere combined--and above all, affordable and unpretentious. This is a treasure to have tucked away in the Northern Berkshires! Well done Spice Root!
